Just like Bathsheba, Nathan also told David who was not invited, but he expanded this list. Added to the name of Solomon were Nathan himself, Zadok the high priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, who we have seen, was the commander of David’s bodyguard of permanent soldiers.
Why had such important figures been omitted from the invitations to the feast? The additions that Nathen added to the uninvited list may have served to increase David’s suspicions of Adonijah. The inclusion, however, might have given David an idea as to the possibility of stopping Adonijah in his tracks.
26 But me, your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he has not invited.
