1. Isaiah 23:3 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What was the grain of Shihor and the harvest of the Nile, and what is being described in this verse?

Isaiah 23:3 (ESV)

3 And on many waters your revenue was the grain of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile; you were the merchant of the nations.

This verse describes Tyre’s former glory and importance. Shihor may refer to a branch of the Nile, or the name may be a synonym for the Nile, in which case the verse simply has two parallel phrases to describe that which the Nile produces. Grain grew in abundance next to the Nile but was scarce in Phoenicia and was important produce with which Tyre could trade to increase their wealth.
