Why was Saul sitting in his house with his spear in his hand?

1 Samuel 19:9 (ESV)

9 Then a harmful spirit from the LORD came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing the lyre.

Possibly as a symbol of his kingship, Saul’s spear appears to have been by his side in formal situations (see 1 Samuel 20:33; 1 Samuel 22:6; 1 Samuel 26:7).1
