Abiathar’s escape is a testimony to the Lord preserving his people in the midst of their enemies.1 Abiathar would remain with David for the rest of his fugitive days (1 Samuel 23:6, 1 Samuel 23:9; 1 Samuel 30:7; 1 Kings 2:26) and eventually share the position of high priest with Zadok (2 Samuel 20:25). Later he would be banished by Solomon because he sided with Adonijah (1 Kings 1:7). He was the one man that the Lord promised would not be cut off (1 Samuel 2:33).2
20 But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.
