David had been fleeing from Saul for quite some time (see 1 Samuel 19:1 – 22:23), so it is unlikely that he had finally come to realize the extent of Saul’s hatred here. Most likely this verse is to be understood as a confirmation that Saul was looking for David and David was conscious of the fact that he needed to keep himself hidden.
