Job 17:9 (ESV)

9 Yet the righteous holds to his way, and he who has clean hands grows stronger and stronger.

Eliphaz had said that Job undermines piety and hinders devotion to God (Job 12:4). Yet, says Job, the piety of those who are truly upright is not weakened by the mystery of his suffering. These people rather grow stronger in their piety, convinced that righteousness must eventually triumph. Job arrives again where he started: belief in God’s sovereignty and acceptance of his mysterious will (Job 1:21).
