Peter indeed speaks about shepherds and sheep, and in the present passage he indicates only that the shepherds will receive their wages. For brothers providing God-pleasing leadership in the context of (potentially) intense suffering, where their service could land them in prison or the penalty of martyrdom, the concept of wages is an incentive to persevere. All God’s people will, of course, receive the inheritance already reserved for them in heaven (1 Peter 1:4; James 1:12; Revelation 2:10).
4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
