The term “likewise” connects the instruction given to the younger in 1 Peter 5:5a to the instruction given to the elders in 1 Peter 5:1–4. As the elders were not to set their own agendas in providing leadership but were instead to “shepherd” their people since it is “the flock of God,” so the younger were not to follow their own preferences but to recognize that God supplies structures within his flock such that there are shepherds to whom the sheep need to submit.
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
