1. 1 Samuel 25:29 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What did Abigail mean when she said that the life of David would be bound in the bundle of the living?

1 Samuel 25:29 (ESV)

29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the LORD your God. And the lives of your enemies he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling.

Abigail’s words could be a reference to the book of the living, a heavenly book in which all living (see Psalm 69:29). This book was understood to be a record of all the names of the living with those excluded from the book destined for death (Exodus 32:32, Exodus 32:33).1 Alternatively, and in the context of Abigail’s speech, it rather seems as if she was affirming that the Lord would look after David and protect his life. The destiny of the king was safe and secure within God’s promise.2 He did not need to take the law into his own hands because God would care for him.
