Why did David call Saul his king?

1 Samuel 26:17 (ESV)

17 Saul recognized David’s voice and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”

David was very deferential. He still considered Saul to be the Lord’s anointed king of Israel and thus one to whom David owed his allegiance. He was not a rebel seeking to overthrow Saul’s rule but a humble servant.1
