Achish considered that David would be his vassal for life, loyal in his service until the day of his death.1 Even after Saul’s kingship passed away, given what Achish thought David did to the people of Judah, he assumed there was no way in which David would be well received in Israel.
12 And Achish trusted David, thinking, “He has made himself an utter stench to his people Israel; therefore he shall always be my servant.”
