Why does the woman prepare a meal for Saul?

1 Samuel 28:21–22 (ESV)

21 And the woman came to Saul, and when she saw that he was terrified, she said to him, “Behold, your servant has obeyed you. I have taken my life in my hand and have listened to what you have said to me.

Seeing Saul’s exhaustion, the woman makes a meal fitting for a king.1 She slaughters a fattened calf (1 Samuel 28:24), a delicacy that was available only to the wealthy (cf. Jeremiah 46:21; Amos 6:4).2 The reason for her actions are not clear but it likely has to do with honouring Saul in some way.
