Seeing Saul’s exhaustion, the woman makes a meal fitting for a king.1 She slaughters a fattened calf (1 Samuel 28:24), a delicacy that was available only to the wealthy (cf. Jeremiah 46:21; Amos 6:4).2 The reason for her actions are not clear but it likely has to do with honouring Saul in some way.
