Given the manner in which Jonathan had earlier strengthened David (1 Samuel 23:16; cf. 2 Chronicles 15:8),1 it is likely that David did something similar here. He simply reminded himself of God’s promises2 and in doing so found new courage to act—courage that came from the intimate relationship he enjoyed with the LORD.3
6 And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.
