Gaza was the chief city of the five major Philistine cities. It was located deep in Philistine territory, about three kilometres inland from the Mediterranean to the west, and eight miles southwest of Jerusalem. Of the Philistine cities, it was the most distant from Samson’s home. It was a great urban centre. Before the Philistines had arrived, Gaza had been the capital of the Egyptian province of Canaan.1
1 Samson went to Gaza, and there he saw a prostitute, and he went in to her.
