The Bible tells us that God loves righteousness. This truth is displayed in his reply to Solomon, for Solomon’s answer displayed a righteous understanding in the thing that he asked for and in the humility and wisdom that led him to ask for it.
Later in the history of the kingdom of Judah (see Isaiah 7:1–25) one of Solomon’s descendants, would be given an opportunity similar to this. He was told that he could ask the Lord for any sign that God was going to deliver the house of David from the danger it then faced. Ahaz responded in mock humility that he would not put the Lord to the test.
This response was in reality pride because Ahaz had decided to trust in himself rather than Yahweh. Ahaz received the anger of the Lord instead of his pleasure.
The Lord always looks with favour upon the person who displays true humility and a knowledge of his needs. It is well if we remember this principle.
10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.
