Canaan and Sidon are situated in the Levant, which is part of the Fertile Crescent region and located in the eastern Mediterranean, encompassing the countries of Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine/Israel, Syria, and Turkey. So also are the other nine peoples mentioned in 1 Chronicles 1:14–16. It is interesting that the Chronicler takes special interest in the people whose descendants were of recent times and even his contemporaries. These obviously include Egypt, Ethiopia, and Canaan, as well as the Philistines, Jebusites, Amorites, and the Hivites (Horites). These nations of the Gentiles are in some instances the Jews’ neighbours and are therefore to be viewed also as the objects of God’s care and concern.
