The Lord now pays special attention to the people who are in the process of building the city and the tower. The verse shows that he is mocking man in his quest for power. Man thinks he can climb up to heaven; that he can ascend to the heavenly heights. The Holy Spirit describes God’s special attention to this event with these words: “And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built.” The Lord has to descend from afar just to see something of this so-called impressive work of man. God’s irony is clearly on display! God is so great and man represents so little!
5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built.
