  2. Exposition

How does the woman's beloved graze among the lilies?

Song of Solomon 2:16 (ESV)

16 My beloved is mine, and I am his; he grazes among the lilies.

Both the young man and the young woman have referred to her as a lily (Song of Solomon 2:1–2). She has also referred to him as a gazelle and young stag (Song of Solomon 2:8). To browse among the lilies is thus for him to partake of the pleasures she offers.1 The young woman is again anticipating the joy of their relationship being consummated in sexual intimacy.
