Winds can be so strong, destructive, and untamable, yet they are God’s messengers.
The flaming fire of lightning, uncontrollable for humans, is under God’s management.
Wind as well as fire must serve him. How mighty the Lord is, and how befitting our awe for him is.
Via the Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint), this verse is quoted in Hebrews 1:7: He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.
It is remarkable that the angels are referred to here as winds and as flames of fire. This underlines that just as wind and lightning are in God’s service, so too the angels are to simply carry out what they have been instructed to do by God. It is encouraging that a little further in Hebrews, we read about the angels, Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?
(Hebrews 1:14).
The mighty God employs his servants for our salvation. That is wonderful!
4 he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire.
