After giving us a time marker for the temple’s construction, the writer starts to set before his readers the overall plan for the construction. It is well, therefore, that we look at the structure of the chapter at this point. 1 Kings 6:2–10 gives us the plan of the temple from the view of the outside. 1 Kings 6:14–30 presents the plan of the interior of the Temple. These two groups of verses are separated by 1 Kings 6:11–13, which contains the Lord's command to Solomon concerning the spiritual requirements for the temple to fulfill its function as a dwelling place for God among his people.
2 The house that King Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high.
