1. Galatians 3:16 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does Paul mean when he talks about the promise being to a single seed?

Galatians 3:16 (ESV)

16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.

Paul argues that the promises spoken by God to Abraham find their fulfilment in Christ.1 He is the representative offspring of Abraham (Galatians 3:16) who came to crush the serpent (Genesis 3:15).2 Through his obedience he earned the right of inheritance (Galatians 3:18) which he shares with all those who are united to him (Galatians 3:29).
