What does it mean to be one in Christ?

Galatians 3:28 (ESV)

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Paul emphasizes that faith in Christ qualifies one to be a member of God’s people. Racial, sexual, and social distinctions were the order of the day when Paul wrote his letter.1 However, earthly status (ethnicity, sex or social class) is not relevant when it comes to belonging to God’s people.2 Oneness in Christ is thus a oneness in faith (Ephesians 4:4–6), a unity that was visibly demonstrated by a common baptism (Galatians 3:26).3
