Why did Joseph and Mary need to bring a sacrifice?
Luke 2:24 (ESV)
24and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”
The sacrifices were part of the purification following childbirth. For wealthy families, a lamb and a pigeon were required (Leviticus 12:6–7). Those who could not afford a lamb were allowed to bring two pigeons instead (Leviticus 12:8).
