Sermon goal for Matthew 5:17–20

Matthew 5:17–20 (ESV)

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Help God’s people to realize that Jesus is the centre point, not only of history but of Scripture. All of Scripture testifies to him. He is the one who brings to fulfillment what was revealed in the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms. This idea is very important when it comes to correctly interpreting and understanding God’s Word. Whether we read from the Old Testament or the New Testament, every passage of Scripture must be reflected on and interpreted in the light of the work that Jesus came to do.

Along with affirming the centrality of Christ, your sermon should also explain our relation to his law. We do not come to the law as a ladder to climb, but as a blueprint for godly living in response to the grace that God has shown us in Jesus Christ. This is also a very important idea/concept that needs to be clearly explained.
