Divorce was widespread in Israel in the time when Jesus ministered on earth. Often, those who divorced and remarried did so thinking that they were honouring the seventh commandment, since they were breaking marriage relationships and entering into new ones, never sleeping with someone who was not their spouse. As lust is one form of unfaithfulness to your spouse, so is divorce, which is why it is a natural topic for Jesus to also address. 1
