Lamentations 1:12 (ESV)

12 “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which was brought upon me, which the LORD inflicted on the day of his fierce anger.

Here Jeremiah makes Jerusalem (specifically the God-fearing people of Jerusalem) speak for herself. Over and over again, Jerusalem tells what the Lord has done to her. It was he who did all of this to Jerusalem, because of her sins!

Jerusalem’s suffering was deeper than the world could understand. This is because of what she used to be: blessed by God, the only people on earth whom he chose to be his beloved people (Romans 9:4; Psalm 147:20). Because she broke his covenant, she now experienced the wrath of his curse (see Leviticus 26:1–46; Deuteronomy 28:1–68).

This is even more true of the church of today, with whom God made his new covenant. God’s judgment will be much worse over the unfaithful part of his church than over the world (Matthew 11:20–24; Hebrews 10:28–31). “Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required” (Luke 12:48).
