Why is Micah so slow to respond?

Judges 18:22 (ESV)

22 When they had gone a distance from the home of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house were called out, and they overtook the people of Dan.

While the narrator does not indicate how long it took for Micah to react to his missing items and priest, it is clear that by the time he could arrange help for the chase, the Danites had gone a distance from the home of Micah. Would he not have heard the noise of the Danites as they broke into his shrine and also talked with his priest? Perhaps he had been bound and gagged. Or maybe he was afraid at first. We do not quite know why it is only after the Danites left that he at least reappears in the narrative.1
