Judges 18:24 (ESV)

24 And he said, “You take my gods that I made and the priest, and go away, and what have I left? How then do you ask me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”

God is the only one who will never be taken away from us, though that is what we deserve for all our foolish desires for some sort of earthly, temporary inheritance. But God did not leave us. He gave us his Son, a true and lasting inheritance. He is the one in whom there is no emptiness, but only fullness of life. Christ never bowed the knee to any idol. He never sought earthly success. He gave his heart to the worship of his Father. Because that’s where he knew he could find true success and blessing, in fearing God and keeping his Word. And so he took on himself God’s curse for our idolatry; he died for his people, as he promised he would. That was an act of pure and total worship of his Father, who was well pleased with that worship, so pleased with that sacrifice that he raised his Son from the dead. So that every last believer in Christ could receive an everlasting inheritance in the heavenly places.

When you find Christ, you find blessing, success, and inheritance. Then you may rightly say, Without Jesus, what have I left? He is my everything! If you know that Jesus Christ is ultimately all you have, you discover he is all you ever need. He is your inheritance who will never fade away. And you get to enjoy him now, already. You don’t have to chase after and fight and kill for your inheritance. You have it already now, in the one who gave his life for you. He is in heaven, and when he returns he will bring a heavenly inheritance with him, the new Jerusalem, the everlasting Promised Land.
