One God in three persons

1 Samuel 23:1–29 (ESV)

1 Now they told David, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are robbing the threshing floors.”

What does 1 Samuel 23 reveal about who God is (Father)?

  • The LORD is sovereign. He uses a Philistine raid to stop Saul from catching his servant David.

  • The LORD is working all things for good. Through his King he protects the people of Keilah from the Philistines.

  • The LORD communicates. He answers questions from David by means of the ephod and thereby directs/guides him.

  • The LORD knows that we are flesh. He sends Jonathan to encourage David after David is betrayed by the people of Keilah.

What does 1 Samuel 23 reveal about what God does in my place and on my behalf (Son)?

  • Jesus Christ is the King who always submitted to the LORD’s guidance. Throughout his life, he meditated on Scripture and allowed God’s Word to influence his thoughts and actions. Thereby he lived the perfect life of obedience. Despite his love and concern for God’s people, he was betrayed by his friends and family. A betrayal that resulted in his death where he died to pay for the very sins of those who betrayed him. As such, he lived the perfect life in my place and died the death that I deserve for my failure to submit to God and love him with all my being.

What does 1 Samuel 23 reveal about what God does in me and through me (Holy Spirit)?

  • God the Holy Spirit helps me to meditate on God’s Word. Through the church community, he guides and grows my understanding. He also works powerfully in my heart so that it is more and more my desire to ask What does God want? and do what God says.
