The meaning of Leviticus 21:4 is difficult to determine. In particular, the phrase as a husband
appears out of place. Three possible meanings have been suggested by commentators. The first interpretation of the text is that it prohibits a priest from burying his wife. This view, however, seems too extreme given the exceptions listed above. The second interpretation is that it forbids a priest from marrying a woman with questionable character. This view seems to take the present verse out of the immediate context. A third interpretation may be that a priest is not allowed to bury any in-laws, those who are related to him by marriage and not by blood. This final proposal seems to be the best.
4 He shall not make himself unclean as a husband among his people and so profane himself.
