The significance of blood for atonement is taught and is clearly revealed in this chapter. Understanding this concept is foundational to appreciating the work of Christ on behalf of his people. The author of the book of Hebrews writes, Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins
(Hebrews 9:22). The animal on the altar and the shedding of its blood are shadows of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Just as the animal was slain for the sin of the people, so Christ bears the wrath of God for the believer.
