Masters refer to slave owners.1 The two masters in view are God and wealth. Jesus affirms that it is not possible to give total allegiance to either if both are served. Possessions demand self-centred living whilst service to God requires using resources also for the benefit of others.2 Implicit in Jesus’ words is the idea that unswerving loyalty to God is demanded from all kingdom citizens.3
