The word Jesus uses here simply means reward
(as other major translations render the term). That reward can be positive or negative, that is, depending on obedience or disobedience (Deuteronomy 11:26–28; Proverbs 11:18, Proverbs 11:21). Jesus expands on the idea of reward
(or recompense
) when he adds to repay each one for what he has done.
The idea of a reward on behaviour before God is found throughout Scripture (Genesis 2:17; Leviticus 26:3ff; Job 34:11; Psalm 62:12; Jeremiah 17:10; Matthew 16:27; Romans 2:6). By referencing a reward
here, the Lord highlights the responsibility he has laid upon each person to take the imminent coming of Christ seriously.
12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.
