These words recall Revelation 1:1. Yet in the course of twenty-two chapters, the identity of I, Jesus
has been further revealed so that Jesus’ current self-revelation has more shine than it had in Revelation 1:1. We could recall Jesus’ great majesty in Revelation 1:12–16; more significantly, we may note that John’s readers could recognize elements of this revelation being fulfilled (initially) in the events of their world—and so be reassured that this Jesus
was in fact the ruler of kings on earth
(Revelation 1:5). Jesus had just reminded his hearers/readers that he was the Alpha and the Omega, the cause and climax of all things.
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
