Via his angel, Christ Jesus had revealed the contents of the book of Revelation to John (Revelation 1:1), who in turn had to write down all he saw and then send it to the seven churches of Asia Minor (Revelation 1:11). The seven churches were not to shelve this book but to read it (Revelation 1:3). In the present passage John (and behind him Jesus Christ himself as ultimate Author) invites every hearer in the seven churches (and so all hearers of all ages and places) to echo the fervent call of the Spirit and the Bride, Come!
17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
