It is remarkable that the evangelist Luke, unlike he does in Luke 17:1, now indicates the disciples as apostles.
The name apostle
was given to them by Jesus when he chose the twelve (see Luke 6:13) from his disciples. This special name expressed that they were sent out by Jesus with a proxy (see John 13:20). It indicates a high position which the Sender had given them.
But now, the apostles are shocked by Jesus’ words. Having to forgive so often? Always be willing to forgive? How can we keep up with that? Is this not going beyond our abilities?
We do not have such a great and strong faith. O yes, they believe in Jesus as the Christ, but this? That is why they ask, literally in the Greek text, Add to us faith.
Let Jesus give them this special power of faith, so that they have energy to show the world great deeds.
5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”
