His name: Which no man knew but Himself

Revelation 19:12 (ESV)

12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself.

In addition to that name King of kings and Lord of lords, Revelation 19:12 says that He comes with a name written that no one knows but Himself. The fact that we don't know this name (and cannot know) indicates that it refers to the depths of the glory of His divinity. The world thought that they knew Him when He was upon the earth the first time. They thought they had Him pegged. They thought they had Him figured out. They thought it was simple, really: All He is is just a man! He is an illegitimate son from a no name town in Galilee. But now on His return He reveals in a name that no man can read (it is written, but no man can read it) that there are depths to Him and to His divinity that no man can plumb.

Names reveal. All the names of Jesus reveal things about Him and His majesty. He is Jehovah salvation; He is Lord over all; He is the Anointed One – as His names Jesus and Lord and Christ indicated to us. But there are depths about Him, beloved, that are so glorious and so beyond human comprehension that the only name that can possibly reveal these things about Him is a name that cannot be read in any human language! Though He shares His name Christ with us (He calls us Christians), this name not only cannot be shared with us, but it can’t even be read by us! He is God Himself in human flesh, and as such there are depths to Him that are beyond our comprehension. He is glorious! He is coming back revealing all that He is in His might and majesty.1
