There is one name of this returning Christ that we have not mentioned yet:
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True. Revelation 19:11a, KJV
Beloved, we must see in the return of this King that it is the return of the one who is faithful and true! Faithful to the covenant bond that He has between Himself and His bride, the church. From the day that Cain killed Abel, His beloved bride has been under attack in this world. Read history of the church! Ever she has been abused and mocked and scorned for the sake of her confession. And ever has she been told throughout the history of the ages that her hope is always and only in the return of this King upon the clouds of glory. Look up! Look up! From the prophets to the preachers, the message of hope has always been this: Your redemption draws nigh! Look up in hope! And for how many centuries, how many millennia, has this redemption not yet come to pass? Generations upon generations are told to be patient, just to wait. And all the while more and more saints have been added to those waiting under the altar. All the while more and more suffer mockery and abuse.
And don't think, beloved, that the Lord Christ has not wanted to come and enter into the midst of that and take His bride out of it all history long. But He must wait, He must watch and He must work for the salvation of all of His elect – every last one – before He can return. And He must wait for the race of men to fill up the cup of iniquity. But from the right hand of Jehovah God He works tirelessly for the day when all is accomplished. The day when He can ride in upon His white steed as the hero of His damsel in distress, and take her out of her misery and unto Himself in safety and peace!
From the time of the Middle Ages on until today there have been stories of the white knight upon his white horse defeating the evil knight upon his black horse to rescue the damsel in distress. We understand that all those stories have their origin in this, the true story, when at the end of all things, when the time is right, the King of kings is released into the fray of this evil world where His church is in distress, and upon His white horse of victory rides to the rescue of His beloved bride! His name is Faithful and True! And He will take her to Himself and He will marry her, and He will be one with her in the consummation of the covenant of grace, and they will ride off together. But not into the sunset, for where He takes her there is no more sun. He Himself is the light of that place. There will be no more night there, and no sun will ever set upon the fervour of their love.1
