The concept of measuring is drawn from the agricultural world. A measure was the weight or scoop used to measure grains and other agricultural products for purchase.1 Similar to what Jesus has said on judging others, he is affirming that those who persist in unmerciful behaviour (Matthew 6:14–15; Matthew 18:21–35) thereby indicate that they do not know God’s mercy and they will face his wrath on the day of judgment.
2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.
