The old man’s offering of his daughter and the concubine had echoed Lot’s offering of his two daughters to pacify Sodom (Genesis 19:6–8). But at that point the similarities between the two episodes end. The old man includes in his invitation the command to violate them,
an encouragement that Lot in Sodom did not lower himself to. In this way, Gibeah has out-sodomed
Sodom!1
24 Behold, here are my virgin daughter and his concubine. Let me bring them out now. Violate them and do with them what seems good to you, but against this man do not do this outrageous thing.”
