As of this verse, the Levite is no longer described as the woman’s husband,
as in Judges 19:3, but her master.
This is to emphasize that the concubine is his slave, for his whims. There is no more semblance of a husband-wife relationship.
What is also significant is that the narrator has masters
instead of master
here. That could make the reader unsure as to whether the host is included as another master.
But, in Judges 19:27, where again masters
(plural) issued, the verb rose
is in the singular. The pluralizing of the Levite as masters of the concubine is done to make the point: in giving his singular right over the woman to other men to master her, the Levite implicitly partakes of their abuse.
