The Anakites were descendants of Anak son of Arba (Joshua 15:13) and the fabled Nephilim (Numbers 13:33; Genesis 6:4). Their height and size had especially terrified the Israelites spies when they were first sent to scout the land (Deuteronomy 1:28; Deuteronomy 2:10, Deuteronomy 2:21; Deuteronomy 9:2–3). Goliath of Gath was most probably a descendant of the Anakite remnant in Philistia (1 Samuel 17:4, 1 Samuel 17:8, 1 Samuel 17:23; 2 Samuel 21:16–22; 1 Chronicles 20:4–8).1
21 And Joshua came at that time and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction with their cities.
