When we know that others have experienced the same trials as we have, it often helps to alleviate our grief. But Jeremiah says three times in this verse that there is no one he can compare Jerusalem with. He cannot offer her this comfort. The disaster that has come over her is as deep and unmeasurable as the sea. No human being can help her. In verses 14–16, Jeremiah will illustrate this fact.
13 What can I say for you, to what compare you, O daughter of Jerusalem? What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For your ruin is vast as the sea; who can heal you?
