  2. Exposition

What is significant about the use of the name “Lord”?

Nehemiah 1:11 (ESV)

11 O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”Now I was cupbearer to the king.

The term Lord is printed in lowercase letters to indicate that the Hebrew term Nehemiah used reflects not God’s covenant name Yahweh (which would be rendered in small caps: Lord) as he had in Nehemiah 1:5, but God’s identity as sovereign Master. This sovereign Master had the mighty hand able to devastate Pharaoh as he freed his people from their bondage (Nehemiah 1:10). He remains mighty to gather his outcasts from the uttermost parts of heaven (Nehemiah 1:9) and restore them to devastated Jerusalem (and so rebuild the place God had chosen for his own dwelling). The use of the term is a confession of confidence that God is more than able to fulfill his promises.
