1. Nehemiah 1:11 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does the phrase “delight to fear your name” mean?

Nehemiah 1:11 (ESV)

11 O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”Now I was cupbearer to the king.

The term delight denotes the direction in which one’s heart inclines, what one’s passion is. Depending on the leaning of the heart, the term fear can denote terror (of God) or admiration and respect (for God) (Jonah 1:5, Jonah 1:10, Jonah 1:16); in the present context the reference is to the latter. The term name refers to God’s reputation. Put together, Nehemiah speaks here of those who have great thoughts of God and desire that his standing be greatly enhanced among the nations.
