What makes this confrontation different from the previous ones?

Judges 20:34 (ESV)

34 And there came against Gibeah 10,000 chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was hard, but the Benjaminites did not know that disaster was close upon them.

10,000 chosen men out of all Israel come out from ambush and came against Gibeah, that is, they came between the city and the Gibeonites who have been drawn away from it. The chosen men thereby cut off Gibeah’s line of retreat. Benjamin is now significantly weakened because it has to fight on two fronts, before and behind them. It has nowhere to go. And there is no longer any serious distance between Benjamin and the army of Israel. So stone-slingers can no longer be effective. This is a hand-to-hand battle, of swordsmen. And Gibeah is sorely outnumbered.
