Proverbs 25:11 (ESV)

11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.

Via a double image—apples of gold set in a graceful art object of silver—the great importance of a fitting word is being emphasized. This expression induces us to be careful in speaking. To speak only words that are fitting and wise.

For so often we hurt others with our words. James 3:5–6a speaks poignantly here: So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. It can be done differently, and it must be done differently. Well-chosen words are so healing.

This nice sentiment is also found in Proverbs 15:23: To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is! It is as beautiful as golden apples in a setting of silver.
