Christ Jesus is himself the Word of God (John 1:1–2), yet became flesh (John 1:14). In the flesh he respected the Scriptures he had, did not challenge or reinterpret what was too hard, and submitted to their every law, even when obedience (respect, submission) drove him to the cross. In so doing he set the standard for our response to the Word, and he atoned for the arrogance of which we’re guilty when we set aside or circumvent a portion of God’s revelation (for whatever reason). His respect for the Word is our salvation.
18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book,
