Again, Jeremiah makes the people say that it is God himself who had slain and slaughtered his people. (God had also warned the people that this would happen; see Jeremiah 9:21–22; Jeremiah 14:16.) He cannot be blamed, he can only be asked to look at the tragedy of young and old, men and women lying together in the streets.
21 In the dust of the streets lie the young and the old; my young women and my young men have fallen by the sword; you have killed them in the day of your anger, slaughtering without pity.
