The laying on of hands is a confirmation of the calling which Saul and Barnabas have received for a new mission1 as well as a commissioning for this service, a commissioning whereby the church as a whole pledges its support2 and commends them to the grace of God (Acts 14:26).3 It was not an ordination into office, seeing as Saul and Barnabas already served in the office of teacher (Acts 11:26).
3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
